Assemblage from collected objects

Each compartment of this piece represents a month of growth during the pregnancy cycle, hence the nine cells, where mine was cut short. The first six cells represent the timeline for normal growth, and the three empty ones depict my premature birth and placement in an incubator. The anxiety related to my viability is characterized by the monochromatic black color that symbolizes the hopelessness my mom and dad felt at that time.

Louise Nevelson’s work, “Mrs. N Palace'' has mesmerized me with its monumental and monochrome usage of the color black, which she achieved by her display of found objects in a monochromatic block presentation. Since I am also a collector of objects representing significant moments in life, I felt a strong connection with this artwork. In this piece, I collected the list of items my mom asked my father to bring over to the hospital and spray-painted them.
